The Maya name "Chichen Itza" means "at the mouth of the well of the Itza”; and is one of the most famous Mayan archaeological sites of the civilization. Chichen Itza is today a UNESCO World Heritage Center; its various structures such as the Temple of Kukulcan often referred to as "El Castillo" (the castle), the Temple of Chac Mool, the Hall of the Thousand Pillars, and the Playing Field of the Prisoners can still be seen today and are demonstrative of an extraordinary commitment to architectural space and composition. On the spring and autumn equinox, at the rising and setting of the sun, the corner of the structure casts a shadow in the shape of a plumed serpent - Kukulcan, or Quetzalcoatl - along the side of the north staircase of the Pyramid of Kukulcan.
